Day 30 - OctPoWriMo: "Forbidden"

Forbidden

Remember the days of Jim Crow
and lawful segregation?
I’d always lived in the north
in a jewel of a city, Detroit
the Motor City
Motown
where hundreds of thousands
of Black people landed
those who fled
the south during the Great Migration.
They carried their fears and truths with them
to the new land
passed them along to future generations.
And we quaked
though now we can drink
from any fountain
choose any trolley seat
shop in J.L. Hudson’s.
Until we look for housing
nothing is Forbidden.
