Day 31 - OctPoWriMo 2013: Commencement Ceremonies

This is the last day for OctPoWriMo 2013. Today's prompt asked us to think about endings and beginnings.

Commencement Ceremonies

Ceremonies to send grads forth
Forth to new beginnings, new lives
Lives that cast their futures
Futures with no end to possibilities
Possibilities that fulfill destinies
Destinies that complete
Complete and renew the cycle of life

Day 30 - OctPoWriMo 2013: Here I Am

Today's prompt asked us to showcase a social issue that is important to us. My observation of too many preoccupied parents missing their opportunity to communicate with their kids is the catalyst for this poem.

Here I Am

Shut the damn phone
Mom-my
Hang up and drive
Dad-dy
Talk to me

                How was my day
                     Scary, humiliating
                What did I learn
                     Meanness rules
                Do I have homework
                     A bully took it
                How is my friend
                     Miserable, too

Talk to me
Look at me
Show me you know
I am here
Shut the damn phone

Day 29 - OctPoWriMo 2013: Epitaph for a Teacher

Today's prompt called for an Epitaph Poem. An epitaph poem is a tasteful summarization of the life of a person.

Epitaph for a Teacher

Here lies a teacher
Beloved and true
She did her best
Touching all she knew

She taught us English
History, math
Lead us on a
Righteous path

Of learning
And becoming more
Outgrowing  ourselves
As we were before

So watch out, world
This is your cue
Hearts full, heads up
We’re comin’ through

Thanks to teachers
For a life of giving
Their inspiration
Keeps us living
