Day 20 - OctPoWriMo: Braving New Land

Today's Theme: Desire and Remembering

Braving New Land

In rapturous anticipation I volunteered,
waved both hands skyward
Everyone who lives in Michigan
Wants to move to California
Leaving family and friends behind
Makes no difference, doesn’t matter
We dream
expect movie life
Hollywood,
Malibu,
San Francisco
Never Bakersfield
Never the desert
Never thermometers reaching
such heights as one hundred twelve
And when faced with loneliness
Faced with strangers who dismiss you because of how you look
And the never-turning leaves of unfamiliar trees
My most ardent desire
became to go home
Home
Where my heart had stayed

  1. And all the Californians want to move to Colorado, thinking only of being Rocky Mountain High and not of the high cost of living.
The grass is always greener somewhere else.
I went through the Hollywood dreams in my youth, to be sure. Ended up staying in the high cost of living state where I was born, though.
    That would be Colorado.

  2. You're right, Cara. The grass IS always greener! But Colorado is gorgeous. I've fallen in love with it as I've traveled to and through there over the years. Thanks for writing and sharing your experience. xoA
