Day 12 - OctPoWriMo 2013: Bibliophile

Today’s prompt encouraged us to write about the shadow side of ourselves; our hatred, rage, lust, greed, etc. I'll admit to bibliophilia.

Bibliophile
I never met a book
I didn’t want to keep
To have and to hold from this day forward
In sickness and in health

To sit on my shelf
My  nightstand, or desk
To wait “on deck” until
I get to it
bring another home, pile it on top,
a friend recommends one I MUST read

So, the stack grows tall
The shelf, overcrowded
The desk, covered
Leaving no writing space

Parting with these books
A frightful thought
Only eased by the vision
of a delighted friend       or stranger
cuddling up with them
loving them like I do

  1. I really liked this one, being somewhat of a bibliophile as well. I have more books than shelf space -- and the Kindle makes it worse. Did I say Happy Birthday recently? Did anyone give you a book? May I recommend The Orphan Master's Son? Not an easy read but truly wonderful. And your poem ends with affirmation. If all my books wind up in a second-hand bookstore, my hope would be exactly what you express!

  2. My goodness...I never would have guessed the depths of wickedness in you! Lol! Okay, I might have guessed bibliophile...but then bibliophilia is a virtue...isn't it?

I loved the mimic of the wedding vows in your opening and loved loved loved the end...thought it had come full circle. After all, when you love something and you cannot keep it...you want someone else to love it just as much. :-)

    1. Thank you, Anna. I'm glad you liked the wedding vow thing. I had the first line and then decided to go back and put the 2nd line in, too. I was pretty tickled with it myself. I sure appreciate your comments. xoA
